Growing up a Caribbean girl in Brooklyn, the holidays weren't complete without a care package sent from my grandmother in Barbados. Black cake (rum cake), Conkies, Sweet Bread and Cassava Pone. Just a few of the delights that would arrive via traveling relatives which meant Christmas had finally arrived as well. As a young adult I longed those foods and felt like something was missing during the holidays. I later found that alot of my Caribbean friends felt the same way. With Grandparents that had passed away and Americanized parents that had given up on making the traditional holiday treats a void had been created. With that void an idea was born, "Give the gift of food for the holidays." Not just any food, the Bajan classics, thus began my holiday baking marathon.

Allison-ism #1: When in doubt, give food.

Giving the gift of food is great if you love to cook, know how to cook, and love the idea of people enjoying your food. If you cant cook, but love the idea of homemade, find someone that can do it for you. There are great "mom & pop" shops that make the greatest treats and wonderful home-based businesses that create delectable morsels for the hoildays. Why not patronize them. You will be helping the economy and bringing a smile to your loved ones faces and bellies. A real smile, not the frozen fake smile that wiil appear when they unwrap the vase you re-gifted because you had no clue what to get them :)

If you live in the Brooklyn NY area, email me for a list of great food vendors that are creating wonderful holiday treats. If your a food vendor in the area email me your info to add to our list :)
